Next Steps in Preparation for U.S. EV Production
U.S. EV Production Preparation
In October of 2022, Honda announced an investment of $700 million for the adaption of several of their own auto and powertrain plants in order to establish the new EV Hub in Ohio. All of this was planned in order to prepare for battery electric vehicle production in 2026. Honda has now announced the steps they plan to take for preparation.
Next Steps
Marysville Auto Plant (MAP)will consolidate two assembly lines to retool for production of EVs and EV components
EV production preparation will begin as early as January 2024. The two production lines making vehicles powered by hybrid-electric vehicle systems and internal combustion engines will be consolidated. And later this year, associates at MAP will start training programs in preparation for skills required for EV production.
Accord production to be transferred from MAP to Indiana Auto Plant (IAP) (as MAP retools for EV production)
The Honda Accord will be transferred for production at IAP in 2025. This will allow for efficient production to be maintained but also enable MAP to transition to EV production.
Anna Engine Plant (AEP) will shift production of some engine components to the Honda Alabama engine plant to prepare for production of battery cases for EV models
Component production of two different generations of engines will transfer to the engine plant at the Alabama Auto Plant (AAP). Machining of the engine head for existing V6 engines will be added to existing AAP operations this month (March 2023). And engine block casting for all new V6 engines will begin in August 2023. Both of these moves will allow for space for future IPU Case production. Then these cases will be combined with battery modules and these EV batteries will power the EVs to be produced at MAP and ELP.
Georgia Honda Transmission Plant will dedicate one production line to e-axle production
A Honda supplier will be partnered with TMP-G for installation of a new line to build e-axles. The Honda supplier will install, own, and operate this new line.
Joint Venture EV Battery Plant
The joint venture EV battery plant recently had a groundbreaking ceremony. Honda and LGES both committed to investing in the new JV facility, which is expected to be completed by the end of 2024.
Continued Production ICE and Hybrid-electric Vehicles
Honda has a goal by 2050 to achieve carbon neutrality for all products and corporate activities. Along with this goal, Honda has a vision for battery-electric and fuel cell electric vehicles to represent 100$ of sales by 2040. Honda also plans to sustain current ICE and hybrid-electric vehicle production through 2030 due to customer demand. The sustained success of these sales will also support the required investment in the electrified future.
*Honda will maintain stable employment during these changes
